Laura Goldner, Psy.D.

You are not alone. It doesn’t have to always feel this hard.

I want you to know that I understand how unnerving it can be to take that step to start therapy. It was hard for me the first time, too. And yet, as scary as it can be to begin that journey, the hope, relief and genuine healing and change that you can find along the way makes it worth it.

therapy style

Whether you are trying to cope with anxiety, feelings of depression, frustrations with work or relationships, or issues specific to parenthood, there is a way through.  Together we can help you listen to your intuition, find your own voice, and create the changes you desire in your life.

Some people think that therapy is only for people in the midst of a total life crisis –and it is truly an invaluable resource at those times. However I believe that if you do therapy during times that are “merely” (or so it may seem) stressful, confusing, scary or frustrating, we may be able to avert a full-blown crisis and move to a place of greater inner strength and fulfillment.

I work with women and men on a wide range of issues.

So many women struggle with body image, sexuality, emotional eating, and health improvement. Certainly a healthy eating or exercise plan can be useful, But if you aren’t understanding and dealing with your underlying feelings about food, body image, even perhaps sexuality, and also finding healthy ways of coping with these feelings and beliefs, those efforts are less likely to create permanent change and a happier you.  Together we can explore and heal the old beliefs, shame, fears, trauma and inhibitions that are keeping you from being your most healthy, vibrant, sexy self!

Men, too, face all sorts of challenges in adulthood: complex and changing roles with competing demands and land mines everywhere. I can help you work through the emotional, social, career, or relationship difficulties that you are in. Doing it alone has its limits, so when you know it’s time for professional help, I’m happy to work with you to sort out what needs sorting, and get to a place where life feels satisfying and meaningful.

Parenting can be one of the most exhilarating and joyous experiences you’ll ever know. Yet it can also be without a doubt, one of the most demanding and overwhelming – both physically and emotionally. For most of us, becoming a parent brings up things we weren’t aware of: memories and experiences of our own childhood, strengths and personal challenges we didn’t know we had, and doubt about our ability to handle this awesome responsibility. Parenthood challenges and changes our relationships with spouses or intimate partners, family, friends and even our work and world views.

If you think you may have been raised by or partnered with a narcissist, it can be so disorienting.  You can feel as if everything is your fault, keeping the peace is your paramount responsibility, that other people’s needs and feelings trump your own,or you may not be aware of what your own needs even are! I am a certified practitioner of Dr. Karyl McBride’s 5-step recovery model, based on her best-selling books, “Will I Ever Be Free of You” and “Will I Ever Be Good Enough.” Together, we can help you see more clearly how your sense of self and your personal power was eroded or perhaps kept from growing. And we can help you build yourself up in the way you deserve to be and feel.

Whatever has brought you to see me, I will use my skills and expertise–combined with personal experience as a woman, spouse, mother, and being single in mid-life–to help you examine and change the situation with which you are struggling. We may use inner child work or EMDR to help you quickly move through an old trauma. I will help you come up with practical strategies and skills to unstick yourself and create healthier relationships between you and the other people in your life. We may also explore how aspects of your physical self-care and work/role/relationship satisfaction is playing into your life.  I may also recommend various other practitioners who can aid in helping you heal. Depending on the situation, this may include acupuncture, yoga, meditation, functional medicine, or other approaches to improving your health. With me, you will have the confidential, accepting space of therapy to talk and be heard, and also an active, engaged therapist who will help you gain insight, heal and move forward towards what you seek in your life.
